Term Tank means a High Armor Profession that will soak up all dmg taken so that Casters dont get hit.

I see the term "Tank" as meaning A high armored profession that can deal as much damage out as they can take in. So thats just how me and most of my guild veiws it anyways.

Then your guild is at odds with the rest of the community. what you described there is a warrior, its what they do.
Taking a look at the old (i can't believe im going to say this) "builds" you will see they consist of stances and defensive skills only. On occasion if the moron playing the tank got a r8 sword they'd take that with 8 in swordsmanship and power attack but the damage there is pathetic.
Warriors are not tanks and vice versa. People may use the warrior profession to play a tank but then it is no longer a warrior, Its a wasted party slot.

Tank= Holds Aggro takes all the damage(must have good armor/set up to do so)
Knight=second warrior in party helps keep aggro in the 1 spot

I've really been playing my Warrior lately and I can tell you, the Warrior isn't a pure tank class. Warriors might have skills that help them tank, but if they were made to be purely tanks why do they have 3 attributes for dealing damage? My Reverse Thumper build dishes out scary damage (30-60 against stuff in HM, I've seen 100+ in NM) plus a pet giving out dazed... I've seen warriors in AB take down a monk in about 5 seconds... I met a W/P who pretty much served as a prot monk...
It's the WoW mentality. Stupid "If You Wear Heavy Looking Armor You Must Be A Tank" mentality.

I have to add that to me "Tanking" is more a style of play rather than any one proffesion.
Tanking is simply having more deffence than offence with the intention to agro the enemy. Wars, Paras, Eles, Rangers, Dervish, 55monks, all can be used as tanks.
It is an Effective style of play, it is not an Efficient style of play.

Aside from the fact that Empathy is not that good in pvp, not many warriors will frenzy while they have it on them unless they know the monk has got their back.
As for gladiators and the rest of that junk, you would not seriously take that to pvp would you? Even a poor warrior will know to ignore you as you pose no threat whatsoever to his team.
Regarding "tanks", to me the term tank means an entirley usless overly defensive waste of a party slot, warriors on the other hand are enrtirely different.

im an idiot, go frenzy urself to death like most warriors that 1 vs 1 me.
as for Gladiators defense in PvP, it works In AB against all dervish, sin's and warriors, as for the build being useless against anything else, i have guildies take them out, and HA, TA, RA, HB i run a knight build cus they just ignore tanks and go for the monks, so ur post is invalid and retarded, i would like to 1vs1 you, and show you how noob u are!!
|
Sorry, but just because you can win a 1v1 against a warrior with anti melee doesn't mean the skills you use are good, and most certainly doesn't mean you're good.

You know what your opponent is running, and you base your build on countering it. That doesn't mean you're smart, that means you're not a total idiot. It also doesn't make you good, because you know you're going to have a massive advantage, and you'd have to be retarded to lose.
I could easily kill you in a scrimmage if you were a warrior. I'd run an anti melee mesmer. Does that make me smart? No. Does that make me good? No.

Personally, I just think of the "Tank(s)" as being anyone on the front line holding aggro away from the squishies. That doesn't mean you have to fill your bar with useless skills and deal 2 dps. All it really means is that you're most probably going to be the first to take aggro and the initial spike of damage from the monsters...and hopefully contain most of the attackers to your position thus protecting the low armored units in the group. Now most battles in guild wars don't turn out that orderly and generally the monsters will break from the front line when they see a low armor low health unit is near. That's why tanking using bad skills is destine to fail and why having high dps is king. An enemy unit can't chase anyone if it's already dead.

But yeah, IMHO...
Tank: anything that can hold aggro and take damage, thus preventing the foes from reaching the backline.
You don't need a tank in most areas. I function well without dedicated tanks, especially when running with heroes/henchies teams. They make awful tanks in general, they're made to kite and not stand in one area taking hits. If I want a tank, I'll take a human one...
When I want one, that is. FoW because it makes it easier to nuke a buncha targets at the same time (drag the melees to the casters and drop rocks on 'em), Slaver's Exile, DoA. Or when I just feel like tanking (N/D AotL MM in an area without too much enchantment removal).
And although I don't believe in the warrior as the only tank, if I have to PUG a tank I'll go for a warrior. Why? 'Cause I wouldn't trust many people on an alternative tanking build (such as a D/E VoS tank, ranger stance-based tank...). TBH, I don't trust PUGs in general as tanks either... so I'll tend to play it in areas like FoW. If I monk, I'm a prot or I have a guildie prot, very, very rarely a bonder (helps for some areas, but in general, overkill, especially in PUGs with a W/E Obs. Flesh tank, which is already overkill to me... the guy barely takes damage, WHY BONDING IT?!).
